Jazz musicians belong to the freelance industry and as such they are in the business of themselves. Musicians not only need to be able to play, but also promote their shows to audiences and venues, develop multiple income streams, and manage their finances responsibly. In the process of teaching students about this plethora of skills and practicing implementation, this session revealed new insights into every student present. Some were already pros at education, working as music student-helpers, others preferred composing and arranging in their free time, and few already had substantial social media following. Being a successful jazz musician has so many concrete and required competencies, but simultaneously endless possibilities for individuals to monetize their talents.
