In our last session of the year we discussed how to get involved in a local scene, how to be a successful bandleader, and how to have a successful gig. Amidst all the important information, what seemed to make the lesson stick in students’ memories were the tragicomic anecdotes along the way. Like, don’t take a gig without asking about the address because you might end up at a venue with the right name, but 45 minutes away from where you’re supposed to be playing. Or, if a bandleader asks you if you’re available on a certain date, you should ask for more information about the gig on the date lest you get hired to play 4 hours away from $100 pay. Overall, this session truly embodied the spirit of the program, teaching students lessons we wished we had known when we started playing professionally.
